The Gambian who took Aung San Suu Kyi to the world court.A UN investigation found in 2018 that the crackdown had been carried out with "genocidal intent". Thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced - many of them to neighbouring countries. The charges refer to a deadly crackdown by Myanmar's military on Rohingya communities in 2017. Myanmar's military government argued that The Gambia had no standing to present the case, but this was rejected by the 13-judge panel. It was introduced three years ago by The Gambia, on behalf of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The decision paves the way for the case - on the treatment of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority - to go ahead at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Judges at the UN's highest court have dismissed objections by Myanmar to a genocide case brought against it.
